A crystal is made of glass. A glass bar is prepared in a glass furnace for making prisms. The bar is put in high heat but only the front part of the bar is heated. When the glass is prepared, it is cut into a definite shape using a manual press.

Chandelier crystals are used for making lamps. It is their primary use but they have many uses like stylish chandelier crystals are used for making wall hangings and fashion jewelry. Since prisms come in different shapes like almond, ball, chains and drops, they have found uses for making decorative items.

Process of making prisms from glass bars

When the heated glass is pressed into a definite shape, the pressed part is cut from the bar and kept in sand for cooling. It is called sand cooling. Sand cooling prevents the glass from cracking or breaking or going out of shape on cooling. When the prisms are cooled, they are taken out from sand for finishing.

Excess glass material from cooled prisms is cut away to bring them into their real shapes. After cutting excess glass, prisms are polished to give them highest finish. Polishing prisms is the most difficult part of prism making as it involves working with manual tools that are too small to handle with hands.

Prisms finished to highest end are used for making lamps. Each prism is handpicked to prevent cracked prisms from being used. Here prism makers have to be careful when determine user value of a prism.
